Dujiangyan, the Living Hydraulic

A 2,300-year-old dam-free water division that still irrigates the Chengdu plain

Li Bing's engineering masterpiece divides the Min River with a fish-shaped stone dike instead of a dam: the inner channel takes just enough water to the Chengdu plain, the outer channel flushes the rest, and a deep-dredge, low-weir rule keeps the whole system self-regulating.

City anchorDujiangyan City

Best time
March-April for the water festival, September-November for clarity and comfort.
Stay
One day including Qingcheng front mountain

A way throughMorning at the waterworks core, afternoon at Erwang temple overlooking it, or pair with Qingcheng mountain next door.

On the wayHigh-speed rail from Chengdu reaches Dujiangyan station in about 30 minutes; buses link the station to the scenic area.

With respectThe causeways and rope bridge stay wet: hold the handrails, mind children at the water edges, and respect the flood-season closures.

Seasonal experience

A clear autumn morning

Cross the rope bridge to the fish mouth

Enter at opening, cross the Anlan rope bridge early before queues, stand at the fish-mouth viewpoint as the river splits in two, and trace the inner channel down to Lidui park — the whole logic is readable from three points.

Why now
This is the rare ancient site where the engineering is the beauty: no single palace, just a river persuaded to behave.
Time needed
2 to 3 hours for the core route
Plan before you go
The scenic area chains several parks along the river; shuttle options exist, and the rope bridge has a one-way flow at peak times.
