Kaiping Diaolou, Watchtowers of the Overseas Return
Fortified multi-storey village towers, built 1900s–1930s with remittance money and a fusion of Western facade and defensive plan
When Kaiping men came back from the gold fields and rail towns of North America with money, floods and banditry still ruled the plain, so they built houses as towers: Roman columns and domed crowns outside, iron shutters and gun loops inside — a skyline of overseas ambition standing in wet rice fields.

Flood-season water mirrors
Spring rains pool in the paddies, and the towers stand doubled in the flooded fields they were built to defy.
