Zhuang Brocade and the Third-Month Song Fairs

Zhuang brocade, one of China’s four great brocades, woven on cotton warp and coloured silk weft

The Zhuang, China’s largest ethnic minority, weave zhuangjin — counted among the country’s four great brocades — on a cotton warp with coloured silk weft, then wear it to the Third-Month Third song fairs, where silver collars catch the light of ten thousand competing voices.

Zhuang Brocade and the Third-Month Song Fairs

City anchorJingxi City

Best time
Around the Third-Month Third festival in spring; autumn harvest markets for everyday brocade without the crowds.
Stay
Two to three days across the Jingxi karst country

A way throughBase in Jingxi city; Jiuzhou old town and the surrounding villages hold both brocade workshops and the main song-fair grounds.

On the wayFly or take the high-speed rail to Nanning, then road west into the karst country; Jingxi has full city services and the fair sites are short drives apart.

With respectThe song fair is a courtship and community ritual, not a photo set: listen through at least one song cycle before raising a camera, and accept tea when it is offered.

Listen for where the brocade stands

Arrive before the singing starts, pick a slope facing the stage of paths, and watch the brocade jackets and silver collars assemble village by village — the dress reads differently at ten metres than it does at arm’s length.

Why now
Zhuang brocade carries meaning in its geometry: diamond grids, woven characters and border stripes can date a piece and place it in a specific county’s tradition.
Time needed
A full fair day plus quiet loom visits
Plan before you go
The lunar date of the Third-Month Third shifts each year between late March and mid-April: check the local government announcement for the main fair venue.
