Huangguoshu, the Great Curtain

Asia's largest waterfall, and a tunnel that runs behind it

A seventy-seven-meter curtain of water you can walk behind: the main fall drops into a green karst pool, and a cave tunnel threads directly through the rock behind the falling water.

Huangguoshu, the Great Curtain

City anchorAnshun City

Best time
September-November for balanced flow and thin crowds; July-August for maximum power.
Stay
One full day

A way throughMain falls and water-cave first, then the Doupotang and Tianxingqiao zones if legs remain.

On the wayHigh-speed rail from Guiyang reaches Anshun West in about 35 minutes; shuttle buses cover the scenic area gates.

With respectThe stone walkways stay wet and mossy: keep to the inner side, and watch for the karst pool edges — barriers exist where the drops are real.

Seasonal experience

A weekday morning in autumn

Walk the water-curtain cave at opening

Enter at opening before the tour buses, take the tunnel behind the falls while it is still passable in one direction, and feel the entire mountain of water vibrating through the rock an arm's length away.

Why now
The cave is the only place on earth where you stand behind a major waterfall; the sound is less heard than worn.
Time needed
3 to 4 hours for the main falls and cave
Plan before you go
The scenic area is huge and split into zones with shuttle buses; water-cave access closes in flood — check the day's status at the gate.
