Wutai Shan, Terrace of Five Peaks

Five flat summits, one white stupa, and sixteen hundred years of continuous temples

A plateau ringed by five flat peaks, with the great white stupa of Tayuan temple anchoring a valley floor that has held monasteries since the Tang — Manjushri's earthly seat, and still a working pilgrimage city.

Seasonal experience

An autumn dawn at Tayuan temple

Walk the stupa circuit before the buses

Arrive at the great white stupa at first light, walk one full clockwise circuit with the pilgrims, then climb the hill behind Shuxiang temple for the valley view — the five terraces ring the horizon like a broken crown.

Why now
The mountain is not a viewpoint but a resident community — the difference is audible in the valley at 5 am.
Time needed
One to two days
Plan before you go
Temple area entry needs ID; the five-terrace circuit (大朝台) is a full-day hike on shuttle-and-foot, weather-dependent.
