Zhalong Wetland, Homeland of Cranes

China’s largest reed wetland reserve and the chief breeding ground of the red-crowned crane

Zhalong’s reed sea spreads across hundreds of square kilometres of the Songnen plain, cut by channels and pools where red-crowned cranes court, dance and rear their chicks — the wild dynamics of a wetland watched over by the most ceremonial bird in East Asia.

Crane courtship dances

April brings the cranes back to nest, and the courtship jumps — wings spread, legs stiff — start across the margins.

Zhalong Wetland, Homeland of Cranes

City anchorQiqihar

Best time
April–May and September–October for crane activity in comfortable weather; deep winter for the snow-plain look.
Stay
Half a day to a full day in the reserve

A way throughThe reserve entrance is under an hour from Qiqihar city; combine the viewing decks with the reed-boardwalk loops.

On the wayFly or take the high-speed rail to Qiqihar, then taxi or bus south-east to the reserve gate.

With respectThis is first and foremost a nature reserve: keep to decks and boardwalks, never feed the wild birds, and give nesting margins a wide berth in spring.

Seasonal experience

A crane flight at the observation decks

Watch the take-off ritual

Position yourself at the wetland viewing decks before a scheduled release or feeding time: the cranes run a few paces into the wind, open those metre-wide wings, and lift with a slowness that makes the whole sky feel heavier.

Why now
The red crown is not paint but skin: it flushes brighter during display, and crane pairs reinforce a bond that can last for life with synchronized calls neither bird can make alone.
Time needed
One morning circuit of the viewing decks
Plan before you go
Crane activities cluster in the morning; afternoon light is good for reed scenery but the birds are farther out.
