Changbai Tianchi, Crater at the Cloud Line

A crater lake held at 2,190 m, shared by two countries, seen through a slot in the rim

China's deepest lake fills an intact volcanic crater: from the rim platforms the water reads as solid blue porcelain, ringed by sixteen peaks, and it vanishes into cloud for days at a time.

Ice-out week

The lake holds its ice into June; the break-up week draws photographers for floating blue pans.

Changbai Tianchi, Crater at the Cloud Line

City anchorChangbai Mountain

Best time
July to August for clear-day odds, late September for gold forest, winter for ice country.
Stay
One to two days

A way throughNorth slope for waterfalls and the classic rim platforms; west slope for the stairway summit and quieter views.

On the wayFly into Changbaishan airport or rail to Baihe; shuttle networks run from both town clusters.

With respectThe Korean side of the lake is a separate national park: never cross the rim line, and treat the border markers as absolute.

Seasonal experience

First shuttle of a July morning

Beat the weather window, not just the crowd

Take the first bus from the north-slope gate, transfer up the zigzag road while morning cloud is still low, and be on the rim platform by 8 am — the lake is visible on roughly one day in three, and mornings hold the best odds.

Why now
When the cloud does lift, the whole rim platform usually gasps at once — a rare collective moment worth the trip on its own.
Time needed
One full day on the north or west slope
Plan before you go
Shuttle systems are mandatory (no private cars); summit platforms close in lightning, and the west slope stairway is the steepest but the least crowded.
