Erhai, Lake Beneath the Cangshan

An ear-shaped highland lake under a nineteen-peak granite range

A long bright lake pressed against the Cangshan range, ringed by Bai villages whose white walls and painted eaves face the water, and cycled end to end in one long, honest day.

Erhai, Lake Beneath the Cangshan

City anchorDali City

Best time
October to November for riding weather; March to April for blossom and clarity.
Stay
One to two days

A way throughWest shore for villages and the mountain wall; east shore for the quiet, rocky, lake-facing road.

On the wayHigh-speed rail reaches Dali from Kunming in about two hours; the old town sits between the range and the lake.

With respectThe lake is a protected water source: swim only in marked zones, and keep e-bikes to the lane, not the walkways.

Seasonal experience

An October morning

Ride the west shore slowly, one village at a time

Rent a bike in the old town, ride north along the west shore road, and stop at each Bai village gate — Xizhou for the morning market and painted timber, then onward with the range always on your left.

Why now
The ride works because the mountain and the water never leave your two sides: one fixed, one moving.
Time needed
One full day for the loop; two half-days with a village overnight
Plan before you go
E-bikes and ordinary bikes rent hourly; the dedicated greenway lane keeps you off main traffic for most of the west shore.
