Qinghai Lake, the Plateau Sea

China's largest lake, a saltwater sea at the roof of the northeast Tibetan Plateau

An inland sea the color of deep porcelain, ringed by grassland, barley fields, and in July by bands of blooming rapeseed so yellow they look painted on.

  • rapeseed yellow

Spring

Migrating birds return

Bird Island reopens as tens of thousands of bar-headed geese and gulls nest on the lake's western shallows.

Best time
July for the rapeseed ring, May for bird island, September for solitude.
Stay
One to two days

A way throughDrive the south shore road via Heimahe for sunrise, then the west shore for the bird reserve and grassland monasteries.

On the wayXining is the rail and air gateway; the lake is a two-to-three-hour drive on new expressway.

With respectThis is Tibetan pastoral land: ask before photographing people or herds, respect mani stone piles, and pack out everything you bring.

Seasonal experience

A July dawn at the lake shore

Watch the sun come up behind the rapeseed

Sleep lakeside the night before, walk out to the shore in the dark, and watch first light cross the barley fields, then the yellow band, then reach the water — the lake turns from black to porcelain in about twenty minutes.

Why now
That twenty-minute color change is the reason to sleep here rather than arrive at noon.
Time needed
1 to 2 days around the lake
Plan before you go
Lakeside lodging is simple; July-August books out weeks ahead, and reserve-side bird island access follows seasonal rules.
