Jilin Rime, Frost Gardens on the Songhua

River mist from a winter that never freezes solid, frozen onto every twig overnight

The Songhua leaves the reservoir too warm to freeze, and its night mist coats the riverbank trees in white rime: by dawn every willow is a crystal sculpture, the sight locals call "spring in winter."

Seasonal experience

A dawn ferry to Wusong Island

Cross before the sun so the frost is still hard

Take the first ferry from Han Tun village, walk the dike path while the rime still holds its overnight shape, and photograph into the sunrise as the mist lifts off the unfrozen channel.

Why now
Rime forms only on still, windless nights after the reservoir water has been warming the river for days: locals check frost forecasts the way coastal towns check typhoon tracks.
