Fanjingshan, the Red Clouds Golden Summit

A 2.5-billion-year-old metamorphic island rising from the karst, a UNESCO natural heritage site

One shaft of rock splits into two summits with a temple bridge strung between them: at dawn the rising sun stains the column red-gold, and the name Red Clouds Golden Summit is not a metaphor.

  • split summit
  • morning glow
  • sea of stone
Spring

Dove trees blooming below the cliffs

Spring brings the dove-tree flowers, white bracts drifting like handkerchiefs down the slopes.

Fanjingshan, the Red Clouds Golden Summit

City anchorTongren City

Best time
April to June and September to October balance open weather with the strongest low-angle light on the summit shaft.
Stay
A long day from Tongren, or two with a summit-night attempt

A way throughHigh-speed rail to Tongren, tourist bus to the Jiangkou gate, cable car to the mushroom-stone plateau.

On the wayThe cable car removes most of the climb; the final twin ladders are single-file and close in storms.

With respectThe mountain is a sacred site and a strict nature reserve: stay on the boardwalks and keep the ladder queues orderly.

Seasonal experience

Climbing the summit ladders in first light

Be on the stone steps before the shuttle crowds arrive

Take the first cable car up, walk the mushroom-stone plateau while it is still empty, then queue for the twin ladders to the split summit and cross the temple bridge as the morning clouds turn gold beneath your feet.

Why now
The two summit temples are dedicated to the Buddha of the Past and the Present, and the bridge between them spans a crack only a few metres wide — pilgrims treat the crossing as a once-in-a-life act.
Time needed
One long day from Tongren; two if you want the sunrise
Plan before you go
Daily visitor caps apply and the summit ladders close in storms; buy timed entry in advance in peak season.
