Meili, the First Gold on Kawagarbo

Thirteen peaks the Tibetan pilgrims circle on foot, none of which has ever been climbed

At dawn the first sun strikes Kawagarbo, highest of the thirteen Meili peaks: the snow burns gold for a few minutes while the valley below is still blue — the moment the whole region sets its alarm for.

Meili, the First Gold on Kawagarbo

City anchorDeqin County

Best time
October to January brings the clearest skies; late-spring mornings are statistically the best golden-run odds.
Stay
Two nights in Feilai or Deqin for two sunrise chances

A way throughFly or rail to Shangri-La, acclimatize a day, then the scenic road over White Horse Snow Mountain to Deqin.

On the wayBuses and shared vans link Shangri-La and Deqin; the viewpoint sits at the roadside above Feilai town.

With respectThe peaks are sacred and unclimbed by consensus: treat the viewpoint as a place of respect, not a backdrop.

Seasonal experience

A sunrise vigil at Feilai Temple viewpoint

Arrive in the dark, leave after the gold fades

Stay in Feilai, walk to the viewpoint before dawn, and watch the light step down the thirteen peaks one by one — Kawagarbo first, the outer ridges last, and the crowd is silent the whole time.

Why now
The mountain is unclimbed by treaty of faith: a 1991 expedition tragedy fixed a line that both government and monastery now uphold — the peak is for looking at, not standing on.
Time needed
Two nights in Deqin for two sunrise chances
Plan before you go
Altitude is 3,400 m at the viewpoint: arrive a day early from Shangri-La to adjust, and do not plan strenuous walks on arrival day.
