Kanas, the Far Blue Bend

A glacial lake feeding Siberian larch forest at China's far northwest corner

A milky turquoise glacial lake folded into Siberian forest, with river bends upstream that look drawn rather than eroded, and Tuva villages holding the valleys between.

Spring

Ice-out on the lake

Spring break-up sends ice floes down the outlet river; the forest stays silver-bare for weeks.

Kanas, the Far Blue Bend

City anchorAltay Prefecture

Best time
Late September for gold larch; June to August for long light and green valleys.
Stay
Two to three days

A way throughOne day for the lake and Guanyu platform, one for the river bends, one for Hemu village sunrise platform.

On the wayFly to Altay or Burqin from Urumqi, then road transfer; the reserve is a full day's drive from Urumqi by land.

With respectThis is border-reserve territory: carry ID for checkpoints, stay on marked platforms, and never approach the water outside boardwalks.

Seasonal experience

Late September, first light

Take the morning platform before the buses arrive

Enter the reserve at opening, ride to the Guanyu platform for the first bend view while mist still sits on the water, then walk the lakeside boardwalk as the light reaches the far shore.

Why now
Mist, glacial color, and empty platforms exist only in the first hour of the day.
Time needed
Two to three days for lake, bends, and Hemu village
Plan before you go
Reserve entry caps daily visitors; the internal shuttle system is the only road transport, and distances are large.
