Mount Tai, First of the Five

City anchorTai'an City

Best time
September to October for the clearest summit dawns; May for blossom bands.
Stay
One night climb or one full day

A way throughRed Gate to South Gate to Summit on foot, or bus plus cable car for a daylight summary visit.

On the wayHigh-speed rail reaches Tai'an directly from Beijing and Shanghai; the trailheads sit minutes from the station.

With respectThe stairway is a pilgrimage route, not a park path: keep right on climbs, and expect the summit to be ten degrees colder than the city.

Seasonal experience

A clear autumn dawn

Climb by night, watch from the summit

Start the stone stairway around midnight with a headlamp, climb the eighteen bends slowly, rent a coat at the top, and take a place on the east terrace an hour before sunrise.

Why now
The crowd goes silent in the last minutes — three thousand years of formal sunrise-watching compresses into one held breath.
Time needed
6 to 8 hours round trip on foot; cable car option by day
Plan before you go
Night climbing needs a working headlamp and warm layers; check cable-car hours if you plan to descend before noon.
