Yuanyang, the Mirror Terraces

Thirteen hundred years of Hani engineering, flooded into a winter mirror field

Thousands of rice terraces carved into the Ailao mountains by Hani farmers over thirteen centuries; in winter each flooded terrace becomes a mirror, and the cloud sea fills the valleys below them.

Yuanyang, the Mirror Terraces

City anchorYuanyang County

Best time
December to March for the mirror season; the green season is beautiful but a different subject.
Stay
Two to three days

A way throughBase in Xinjie town; Duoyishu for sunrise, Tiger Mouth for sunset, and the village walks (Azheke) between.

On the wayBuses and cars reach Xinjie from Kunming in about five hours; the last hour is mountain road.

With respectThe terraces are the Hani farmers' livelihood first: do not climb onto the field walls, and buy your rice and red rice wine from the villages, not the chains.

Seasonal experience

A January dawn at Duoyishu

Wait for the cloud sea to open a window

Be at the Duoyishu platform before 7 am in winter, watch the sun rise over the flooded mirrors, and wait — the cloud sea below opens and closes in loops, and each opening reframes every terrace in the valley.

Why now
The terrace builders engineered the water; the cloud arrives free. Together they are the single most photogenic system in Yunnan.
Time needed
Two to three days for the three main platforms
Plan before you go
Platform tickets are separate for sunrise (Duoyishu) and sunset (Tiger Mouth) zones; mountain fog can cancel everything — have a village-walk fallback.
