Zhangye, the Rainbow Mountains

Twenty-four million years of sediment compressed into striped candy hills

Eroded sandstone hills banded in rust, gold, sage, and cream — a geological layer cake that changes color hour by hour as the desert sun moves across it.

Spring

Sand-clear winds

Spring winds sweep the winter dust off the stripes; colors read sharpest on windy clear days.

Zhangye, the Rainbow Mountains

City anchorZhangye City

Best time
May-June and September-October for comfortable temperatures and sharp light.
Stay
Half day to one day

A way throughPair the sunset session with a morning visit to the BinggouDanxia sculpture zone or the Giant Buddha Temple in town.

On the wayZhangye sits on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed rail line; the park is under an hour from the station by road.

With respectThe stripes are soft sediment, not rock: stepping off platforms destroys decades of formation and is fined — the barrier line is also the photography line.

Seasonal experience

The last ninety minutes before sunset

Follow the sun across the four platforms

Enter three hours before closing, work through the shuttle-served platforms in order, and end at the westernmost one — the stripes ignite in sequence as the sun drops, and the whole valley reads like a lit scroll for about twenty minutes.

Why now
Midday flattens the colors completely; the park is a low-sun phenomenon wearing a daytime schedule.
Time needed
2 to 3 hours
Plan before you go
Shuttle-only internal transport; platforms close punctually at sunset, and weekend sunrise queues form before dawn.
