Zhangjiajie, the Pillar Forest

City anchorZhangjiajie City

Best time
April to May and September to October balance weather and clarity; winter for empty platforms.
Stay
One to two days

A way throughDay one for Yuanjiajie and the natural bridge platforms, day two for Tianzi Mountain and the Ten-Mile Gallery.

On the wayZhangjiajie Hehua airport and the rail station both sit close to the city; buses and park shuttles connect the gates of Wulingyuan.

With respectThe sandstone stays slick after rain: keep to the railings, mind the steps, and respect the closing times of cliff walkways.

Seasonal experience

Dawn after a rain, any season

Read the pillars before the mist lifts

Arrive at the first cable car, ride to the upper platforms while the mist is still low, and watch one ridge of pillars separate from the valley fog as the light rises.

Why now
The separation of stone from mist is the whole composition, and it only exists for the first hour.
Time needed
Full day for the core platforms
Plan before you go
Cable cars and the Bailong elevator run weather-dependent schedules; verify operations in fog or ice.
